Oshawa must wait 3 years for another shot at hosting Memorial Cup

OSHAWA — It’ll be at least three years before Oshawa gets another shot at hosting the Memorial Cup.

Last week the Ontario Hockey League announced there will be no 2020-21 season due to the increasing COVID-19 cases across the province.

Oshawa Generals general manager Roger Hunt said it’s not the news anyone was hoping for.

“Only a few weeks ago, the league and the government had come to a framework on how we would get the end of the season in and then you get that bit of good news and you start to feel good about it, then these (COVID-19) variants and numbers go through the roof and the stay-at-home order being extended basically took our last bit of runway away from us,” he explains.

The cancellation of OHL hockey follows other recreation cancellations in Oshawa, including the city’s popular Canada Day event on the waterfront and Fiesta Week in June.
